Unit 9 : Prepositions-Location and Direction


1)    Prepositions show the relationship between the noun/pronoun with the rest of the sentence.
2)    Prepositions are used to express location (position) and direction.
Examples :
The plate is on the table.
I ran towards her.
In the examples above, the prepositions are placed before the noun ( table) and the pronoun (her).
3)    Prepositions of location include ‘at’, ‘in’, ‘on’, ‘under’, ‘next to’ and ‘behind’.
Examples :

at
The children are at school now.
behind
I hid behind the rock.
In
We went to the island in a boat.
next to
Jane is standing next to a tree.
on
The boy is on a horse.
under
The cat is under the dining table.


4)    Prepositions of direction include ‘up’, ‘down’ and ‘out of’.
Examples :

Down
He ran down the slope.
Out of
Fire! Fire! Get out of the house.
up
I walked up the hill.
