Unit 8 : Conjunctions


1)    Conjunctions are words used to join words, phrases, clauses and simple sentences. Some common conjunctions are ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘or’,  ‘because’ and ‘so’.
2)    Conjunctions are used to :
a)    Join two words.
Examples :
bow and arrows                        small but brave
fair and square              poor but content
skin and bones             rich but selfish
b)    Join two simple sentences to form a compound sentence.
Examples :
I turned around.                                                John left early.
I saw Timmy                                           John was sick.
I turned around and saw Timmy.       John left early because he was sick.
3)    We use :

Conjunctions
Purpose
and
To join two things or actions that are of similar importance.
but
To express contrast of ideas.
because
To show a reason for something done.
or
To show a choice between two things.
so
To show cause and effect.
